Harris Steel Company was established in 1950 with operations in Skokie, Illinois. Jack Harris Sr. started the company with a background as a metallurgist for National Steel Corporation and directed an application based philosophy into Harris Steel. Through continued growth and performance, Harris Steel built a reputation that expanded the customer and supplier base. With modernization and upgrades, Harris Steel built its equipment and facility in Cicero, Illinois around a market base where quality was always first in meeting expectations.

In the early 1980’s, multi-headed slitting lines with looping pits and tension stands provided the flexibility and capacity to meet customer demand. Customized computer programs provided for the access to needed information, individualized per customer and providing improved service to the market.

In 2008, ownership of Harris Steel Company transitioned to Thomas G. Eliasek, who had been President since 1989. Tom had started with the company in 1973, with a background of sales, purchasing and management. The dramatic changes in market posture starting in 2004 forced many companies to deviate from their objectives, but Tom’s belief in the successful philosophies that had carried the company continued. The belief in reviewing applications based on customer specifications and part performance combined with strong metallurgical, operational and sourcing capabilities would deliver a consistent quality product from shipment to shipment. The 2009 market collapse challenged all companies’ philosophies, but Harris Steel remained true to the success it had built over the years.  The financial strength of Harris Steel was never in doubt and carries on today to move into programs easily with customers and vendors.

Harris Steels’ philosophy of specializing in application, understanding total customer needs, establishing best source capability, and understanding the market in all areas of customer expectations is the direction that Harris Steel has maintained for over 60 years and will continue being successful doing so.
